Words and Guitar

Dig Me Out "Words and Guitar"

Chuck Berry made it safe for riffs like this.  You certainly don't have to play all the single notes just right.  But you can spend a lifetime make the first measure of Riff 1 sound like Chuck, and that probably won't be enough.

Riff 3 is nice and may sound really complex and impossible to play.  But you can just strum G# major cords and work your pinky on the B string.  Then, for a couple of measures (Riff 3b) you do a C minor chord and just keep you pinky going.  Once you get that G# - C Minor thing going you have the first half of  Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay" chord progression.  And, you'll have a Chuck Berry and Bob Dylan crossover in one song.

  • Quarter note = 160 or so.
  • Standard tuning.
  • Tabbed where it felt good on the fretboard but there are alternatives.
  • These images a pretty big.  I hope you can be patient for the graphics to load.  (They aren't that big, I hope.)
