Websites of the Atlanta Elections 2001

AnalysisRome fountain - click for big picture

As of 6-29-01 I honestly don't know where I will go with the analysis.  For now I'm making some notes below.  Ultimately I want to write several RFP's for campaign websites.  Photo courtesy Philip Greenspun.

  • It would be really nice if folks knew how to pronounce your name.  It might be even better if they could hear you speak your name using real audio on your site:  The voice is the stock and trade of a politician.  Why not use high tech to deliver that very human part of you?
  • Now (July  28) there is a "Flash" site which is probably not a good thing.  Flash allows designers to make beautiful sites, so what's the problem?   Read Jacob Neilsen's Flash: 99% Bad.
  • Good advice from Jacob Neilsen on managing public relations on your website.  See Kathy Woolard's "Press Room
  • I like email alerts.  I like the idea that the candidate will communicate directly with me.  It gives me a sense that the candidate knows who I am and tries to keep me up to date.  Candidates should keep alerts going after the election.
  • Form mail is OK but many folks would like to send you an email and they would like to put your email in their address list.
  • Some folks will avoid form mail if you require name, address, telephone etc.  You may miss an important message.
  • How do folks know which district they are in?  You can't tell from any of the candidates' sites.
  • Atlanta Journal-Constitution writers Stacy Shelton and Julie B. Hairston are covering the race as of July 26, 2001.
  • Creative Loafing writer Kevin Griffis is covering the race.
  • The Atlanta Tribune, and Southern Voice, also cover the races from time to time.  It is often easier to search google.com to find article about the races.

Shirley Clarke Franklin  Campaign form mail  (Cold Fusion)

Shirley's email alerts are great, except that they don't want you to reply to them.  They want you to click on a URL that sends you to to a form mail page!  Form mail is great when you aren't at your own machine.  But, when I'm at my own machine and I want to reply to an email, I click on reply, imagine that.  It saves me time and I get to keep a copy of my reply, and I am more likely to reply.  They put the "don't reply" message at the very bottom of the message.  Most folks won't read that far and will probably reply anyway.

Robb Pitts  Campaign email

Irritating and slow banner page.

Up as of 7-14-01 (maybe sooner).  Has a link to register to vote.  has nice page of legislative initiatives and links to local news sources.

It may have an email alert under the guise of the "Get Involved," page.  You can subscribe or unsubscribe but you don't really know if you'll get alerts unless you are volunteering.

Michael Julian Bond  Campaign email  Website design: The Alford Group

No email to campaign or candidate :(

Big problems when viewed with Netscape Communicator :(

"On the record" and "biography" pages have html errors that cause overlapping text.(10-15-01)

Very well done sign up for email alerts on the home page.  Very nice looking site.  It is one of the few sites that actually shows the election date. :)

Voter registration and absentee ballot information.  Scrolling news box.

Email address is prominent. Links to voter registration & absentee ballot.  Very interesting "press room" scheme (see managing public relations on your website) but press folks have to pay a price (by signing up) to take advantage of it.

Up as of 8-1-01 but under development.

As of 10-3-01 it's up!  It has email alerts but they are hard to find.  You have to scroll to the bottom of the "Join us" page.  It's worth it.

Try the "Know Your Neighborhood" game: The most unusual feature on any of these websites.

Anne Fauver added 7-28-01  Campaign email  (Macromedia Flash)

Hurray, the first site that describes district boundaries.

This Macromedia Flash site might require visitors to download the flash plug-in.  Then, the navigation is funky, non-standard, and likely to confuse folks:  You have to click on the "X" to return to the home page.  Hitting the "back" button from any page backs you completely out of the website.   You can't book mark anything but the home page.  You can't bookmark the calendar, for example.

Background text on sub pages "I believe that this election .. " is almost unreadable.  None of the text can be highlighted and copied.

That aside, this is an attractive, good-performing, comprehensive website.  It could be just as attractive with standard web navigation.
