***Construction Update. The Eighth Street wing is looking great. The clean-up crew is set to arrive on Thursday July 1 to prepare for furniture arrival on Tuesday, July 6th. There still will be work left to complete: site-work, voice/data, second stairwell, canopy and the punch list!

Football practice has been a challenge with the upper field under siege from construction vehicles and storage trailers, limited stadium use and no locker rooms. When the team returns from camp they will have locker rooms in the Performance gym (the New Gym on 10th Street) and have a practice field.

The Stadium and Music Buildings are to receive their furniture July 26th. The target date of August 3rd is still set for Charles Allen Building. Workers are furiously tackling the task of renovating this building in 90 days.

***The Grady administration will be housed in trailer #2 for the summer. There are signs identifying it. The main phone number, 404.853.4000 will be operational.

***Interested in what goes on at Grady? Want to be in the know? Then get involved with the PTSA. That's what I did. I came to the monthly board meetings, I volunteered for a committee chair position (Teacher appreciation my first year and Secretary my second). I got involved, stayed informed and got to know Grady!

***Barbara Feinberg and John Rick were elected to the Grady School Council

***GHS teacher, Kurt Phillips asks students who plan to take AP Psychology next school year to read the following two softcover books before returning to GHS in August:

Barron's EZ-101 Study Keys: Psychology, by Don Baucum and, Forty Studies That Changed Psychology, by Roger R. Hock.

Both softcover books can be found on any number of "used books" Internet sites including Amazon.com and (my favorite) abebooks.com. Students and parents should note; this Summer Reading List is an optional assignment, but could really help increase students' success in the class and on the AP Psychology exam next April. - Kurt Phillips.

***The school district is looking at a possible change relevant to the time high schools will start for the 2004-2005 school year. The change is being considered because of school bus transportation. If a time change is implemented, you will be notified before school starts.

***Grady Varsity Football for 2004 Heats Up

Summer football fitness and weight training (voluntary) started June 1, but already huge numbers of our guys have been showing up Mondays through Thursdays, 5:00pm – 8:00pm. This past year’s fantastic season has our players fired up and ready to keep the big mo(mentum) going.

Coach Millen and his dedicated staff start each session with the guys paired up on the floor of the gym for intense stretching exercises. It’s amazing to see this segment, as the two man units not only are perfectly spaced apart, but also lined up in rows in complete formation. As the guys stretch each other methodically and deliberately, there is an unbelievable silence in the gym, revealing total concentration. Brothers and sisters, these guys mean business!

Sunday, July 11th, Grady’s players and coaches board a bus for a 4 day football camp at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, then return Wednesday, July 14t.th. The team will sleep in the dorms and dine on campus, in between what will surely be hot, intense, productive training sessions.

Monday, July 19th will be the first official day of mandatory practice allowed by Atlanta public schools. This is when things get real serious.

Friday evenings August 6th and 13th, Grady will compete against other schools in “controlled scrimmage” games. Mark your calendar, bring everybody with you, and come out to support the guys. Remember, fans need to warm up their vocal chords, work on the wave, etc. (Have you ever heard how much racket a plastic milk jug can make when a bunch of pennies are poured in?) Times are not yet announced.

Then finally, Friday, August 20th, the Knights play their FIRST REGULAR SEASON game, at Grady stadium. Time is not yet announced. - Kim Taratoot
