MLPA History and Past Presidents
In the early days of the neighborhood, the Civic Association was active in various activities for the betterment of the neighborhood, including efforts to establish a neighborhood school. In 1934, these efforts resulted in Morningside School on East Rock Springs Road.
The Civic Association was fairly inactive until the late 1960's when plans surfaced to construct I-485 through the heart of Morningside. Several homes were condemned and demolished to make way for a new road. The neighborhood organized and the Morningside/Lenox Park Association was incorporated on May 4, 1965. It took nearly a decade for the courts to rule in MLPA's favor to cancel the highway project. The land where some of the condemned "highway houses" once stood is now Sidney Marcus Park, located between Cumberland and Sherwood Roads.
MLPA remains an issue-oriented organization committed to enhancing the quality of life that makes our intown neighborhood so special. Through comprehensive committee structure, MLPA addresses issues of government, natural resources, human resources and communications.
