Alligator Point lots sought
County Planner Alan Pierce reported Nov. 4 that he had received various replies to certified letters sent to six property owners on Alligator Point regarding the county’s purchase of their lots in Block B, Unit 1 Peninsular Point Subdivision.
The county needs to acquire these lots in order to go forward with the Army Corps of Engineers planned road revetment project to protect the road from future erosion. The properties in question have almost completely eroded away, but they still remain in private ownership.
The replies he reported receiving to date are that the owner of Lot 1 is willing to donate the lot to the county; the owner of Lot 2 is willing to sell the lot to the county for the tax value of $821; the county already owns Lots 3-5; on Lot 6, the owner is considering the terms, and realizes the county’s dilemma, and will advise their decision shortly; Lot 7 is willing to sell but wants to negotiate a better price, and there has been no response from Lot 9.
“The problem is with the owner of Lot 8,” Pierce said. “He stated that he is unwilling to sell and was insulted by the county offer. He is probably unwilling to sell at any price.”
The county commission instructed County Attorney Michael Shuler to begin the contract work on the owners willing to sell, and for Pierce to continue negotiations with the other lot owners.
“The problem with the Lot 8 owner, William Wargo,” Pierce said after the meeting, “is that it his opinion that the county is responsible for the original erosion of his land, and wants to be paid accordingly.”

Developer buys campground
The official announcement was released this week that the old Alligator Point KOA campground is under contract with a local developer, Steve Fling, and Dannitte Mays.
“It is definitely the plan to do a residential development on this property,” Fling, an Alligator Point resident, said Tuesday. “We will maintain a small commercial enterprise on the site, but I believe that the plans will not be at odds with any of the existing character of the surrounding properties, and we intend to be real good neighbors.”
As to the county’s desire to relocate a portion of the Alligator Point road through that piece of property, Fling said, “We would welcome the relocation of the road and look forward to entering into discussions with County Planner Alan Pierce to do our fair share to make that happen.”
