Note: these few comments are added on the 2nd. of July 2004, as the result of an E-Mail from Spain.

Survivors from U-125 were swimming through an oil patch, and Chesterman in Snowflake, thought that if he and Sunflower stopped and collected survivors, they could be interrogated on return to St Johns. He signalled Tay at 0407 ( 4.07 AM ) "Should I pick up survivors?" Sherwood with his reply at 0412 ( 4.12 AM ) was both short and terse: " Not approved to pick up survivors."

Sherwood offered no reason for his decision, with so many U-Boats in the vicinity, he may have considered that it was just too dangerous for both Snowflake and Sunflower to stop to collect survivors. At this distance in time, some would argue, as does my correspondent from Spain, Julio de la Vega-Hazas on the 2nd. of July 2004. For Sherwood his decision " not to rescue survivors" is a sorrorowful black spot for a good officer. He must " have
borne that burden deep in his soul until the end of his life."

Having served in the Battle of the Atlantic over 1940/1941, Sherwood's decision does not suprise me. At that time, it was always a matter of self preservation and survival. My readers must make their own judgements, but no doubt this incident should have beenincluded in my original article, and I correct the ledger now.
