Take a bow, just received these comments from Nigel, I
have yet to reply to
him.

When I looked at Marauders WW2, under Thor, first cruise,
P17,

Para 2  line 1, there should be a space between of2, and
in paras 2 and 3,
the name

is wrongly spelt Volitare 3 times, it should be Voltaire
please.

Also in the 2nd. last para line 1, resourceffil should
read resourceful.

TK, Travel Diary the heading for Anzac Cove in index should read 25th. of April not the 15th. please.

Hello again,

On your web site about HMAS Shropshire, I believe that
photo you attribute
to the ship at Balikpapen

is in fact at Lingayen Gulf in January of 1945, I was a
Lieutenant RAN. in
her at that time, and the Battle of Suriago

Strait took place on the 25 th, of October 1944, not in
August 44 as stated .

Please do not think I am carping, you have done a great
job, you may like
to add my AHOY site to your links, the URL is

printed below.

I will add your site to my interesting sites on the Web.

Best regards,

Mac. Gregory.

Would you like me to airmail a copy of the magazine with
Australia to the
Rescue

in it?

The first interview went on this morning, a male and a lady arrived at 8.30AM, set up a digital camera, put a mike on me, a green back drop, I sat in one of our lounge chairs, and off we went. a new tape had to be put every 35 minutes.

In about 8 weeks time I believe the text will be placed on the net, and it is planned to see 200
veterans. I am lucky to be selected!

It is a big project, 5 interviewing teams, and I was the first to be interviewed in my state of Victoria. 25 people are going to be converting the tapes to text for he net.

Annie and Martin ( the interviewers ) told me our Prime inister is really interested in this project sonsored by the Australian Government via the Department of Vteran's Affairs, and John Howard had already met the production people 7 times to discuss the context and its iportance. Annie and Martin seemed pleased the way it all went, back omorrow at 1PM to go until about 5 PM.

Tonight I am to talk to the Naval Historical Society here in Melbourne, about Southern Armed Merchant Raiders of the Civil War.

In the morning I am off to Caulfield Grammar School, to set up 35 mounted photographs of the war for Australia in 1942, they will act as a backdrop to the assembly the following day.

I return on Wednesday to talk about Anzac Day to the 1,000 students, in two separate sessions, one for the junior school, and the latter for the senior students.

They have been on first term holidays, and return tomorrow, that is why
their Anzac Day service will be held on the 30th. of April, rather than on the 25th. which is
the actual anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli 88 years ago, and that day is a national holiday anyway.

Thank you for the piece about the Submarine Memorial in SC, we should link that report to our Submarine page.

You will have had enough of me ere this.

Bye for now.

Mac.

Voltaire

Thanks for being the only decent website to be easily navigated! Must come natural for naval people. I have been looking for ages for one that would give me information on my father's ship the Voltaire.  He was a POW for the remainder of the war. Sadly he passed away in 1995. I would have loved him to be able to see this. The stories of the sinking were horrific and he only survived a shrapnel wound as he was short! His captors told the prisoners of how they hated the Gestapo adding that as sailors, they had only one enemy - the sea! My father married after the war and moved to Rhodesia and was even a reservist there in the troubles in the 1960s and 1970s and I was also serving then. Shame we humans don't act more humane?

Do you know of a website similar to Friends Reunited whereby I may be able to contact any survivors of the above conflict? Perhaps you can incorporate the idea into your website.

Thanks for your time in reading this.

Yours faithfully,
George Nigel Tidbury, son  of George Tidbury.

Nigel,

Thank you for your very kind words about my Ahoy site, all the credit for design, ease of getting round that site goes to my good friend Terry in Atlanta, Georgia who runs it all on my behalf.

I supply all the content, and he puts it up. The kudos for that hard bit all goes to Terry.

We are delighted when some one out there takes the trouble to tell us they like what we conjointly do. I have enclosed a page you may not be aware of about Volitaire, and the shipping compnay to whom she belonged.

No I am not aware of any association about your Dad's ship, and of course time slips by, and no doubt many of his shipmates would have died by now.

I went to sea and to war in 1939 when I was but 17, and now I am lucky at 81 to still be around to write about our Naval History, and some of my own experiences.

The trilogy about the German Armed Merchant Raiders of WW1 and WW2, and those of the American Civil War have always fascinated me, hence my desire to try and write about them and bring it all to hopefully a wider audience via the internet.

Feedback such as yours gives one heart to go on, and plough new fields, so thank you very much for your comments.

If I find any more details about the crew from HMS Voltaire I will get back to you.

Kind regards,
Mackenzie Gregory.
