Father served on British Petrol -1930

Dear Mac,

My father, James William Harris (1907-1997) served on the 'BP' in 1930 sailing between Swansea and the Persian Gulf as it then was known. I have a reference from the master which assisted my father to gain employment after he came ashore . Is there any material in the BP archives at Warwick University do you know?

Regards,
Nigel Harris.

Nigel,

I asked that question of Warwick University, but they did not repond to my question, sorry I could not be of any help to you.

Regards,
Mac Gregory.

Hello Mac,

I understand that you were on the Shropshire once she was given to Australia.  I was wondering whether you have any information on her from before that time.  My father served on her for a period don't know how long for, but he trained as a pilot afterwards gaining his wings in March 1944 before she was given to Australia.

I would be grateful if you can provide any info regarding crew, exploits, etc...

Many thanks,
David Ambrose

David,

Yes I joined HMAS Shropshire as a Lieutenant in 1944 and served in her until 1946, when she took the Australian Victory Contingent to UK.

I stayed behind in Portsmouth to undertake a Long Torpedo/Anti Submarine Specialist course in UK Naval schools over the next 14 months.

I have attached a page from the book by Stan NBicholls on HMAS Shropshire, chapters 1 and 2 are relevant for you.

Chapter 1 includes her specifications, and Chapter 2 covers her early history as a ship in the Royal Navy.

I hope this helps you, otherwise put HMS Shropshire in the Google Search engine, and follow any references that come up.

Best regards,
Mac. Gregory
