HEY, Thursday we went on a Jeep tour and then went to buy tickets for a Great Wall hike that we did on Friday (3 hours to get there, 3 hours to get back-hike for 10k or 6.2 miles). We randomly saw a guy, and then two of his friends later who we had met in Xi'an...how random is that. The Great Wall was really fun and I'm glad that I went!! We were sooo tired and the wall is not in good condition. Towards the end (we didn't know where it ended) it was thundering and we went sooo fast and it rained right as we finished. There were all of these people trying to sell us stuff (what usually happens here) and there were some ladies that walked with us a LONG way. The lady who was with me was very nice and held my hand going up and down (I thought it was helpful and nice-the others weren't too thrilled). I found out she was a farmer and 40 years old (there's a picture of us in my pictures). So when the time came they tried to sell us stuff for REALLY expensive and I ended up buying something expensive because I was glad that she helped me!! Friday night we went to some club called Banana that has a hydraulic dance floor..that part was neat but not the part with Beijing's entire population being in the club. Yesterday Erin, Mike, Kristin, and I went and bought a bunch of tea and YARN!!! We ate at this really good Japanese restaurant and bought some DVDS. Any DVD requests or anyone want a Northface jacket (fake)?? You have to let me know soon though because I have less than a week left! I have a project due Tuesday, a test on Tuesday, and our final on Thursday and we still have a lot to do on our list. That's all...if anyone has a request of last minute things they want tell me....but I have NO idea how I'm going to pack my bags (I think I'm going to have to get rid of a lot). I sent Dad the link to the pictures...so ask him. That's all I'm going to the Asia cup game tonight!! It's China vs. Qatar and we all have to find red shirts! Have fun and I'll talk to y'all soon. love Pictures http://www.ofoto.com/I.jsp?c=7gdg4zpt.c7r0srdl&x=1&y=-kfzat0 Second trip to Great Wall http://www.ofoto.com/I.jsp?c=7gdg4zpt.c7r0srdl&x=0&y=-a7znde Second trip to Great Wall (same as above but doesn't require password)
HMS Curacoa survivor I have read with interest the information in your website and have also read the book "A River Runs to War" written by John D Drummond and the Express Newspaper article in the 1970's. My father Stanley Norman Russell was one of the survivors of the tragic accident with the Queen Mary on the 2nd. October 1942. Sadly on the 1st. April 2004 aged 81 after suffering silently for many years with osteoarthritis of the knees, he slipped away to meet his shipmates. Other ships that he served on were HMS Arethusa, HMS Norfolk Richard K Russell
Hello! My name is Philip Russell and I am writing to you about your weblog references to the HMAS Shropshire. My Father, Reginald Arthur Russell (aka J.R.A. Russell) was CPO on that vessel between 1944 and 1945 due to the damage done to HMAS Australia, where he was also CPO writer. His friends called him 'Jack' but his actual first name
was Reginald. We think he may have been in the photo below. Information about my father's service on the HMAS Shropshire is held in Hobart, Tasmania. At present I am living in Wollongong, NSW. When next I visit I will locate the documents and forward any information if you are interested. On visiting your website I found it to be an excellent resource. Thank you for providing it. Regards,
Hi Mac, A few months ago you were kind enought to assist me with info on the Japanese sub A1 type, 1-11. May I trouble you for help again. Do you happen to know where I can get a photo of the 1-11 or 1-9 or 1-10 ? and Sorry to be a pestone of the Liberty ship, William Dawes. These two are the only missing pieces of the story I am going to put together in a week or two about the sinking of the William Dawes, the crews rescue, the bombing of the 1-11 and it's eventual fate and the place Merimbula and Tathra played in the drama. Hope I am not too much of a pest but your Regards, Ken, I am currently in Sydney with only my laptop, which does not have all my references that I keep on my PC in Melbourne. I can only find a model of I-19, which may not be of any use to you at all. Regards, Hi Mac, Thanks for the photograph. The info you sent is both useful and not. If I want to be completely accurate, it's not quite the same shape as the 1-11 according to the A1 specs you sent me a while ago but, if I don't have any luck getting the real thing, I will send the 1-19 [if that's ok ] with the explaination that the 1-11 and the 1-19 were I really appreciate your help and when the story is complete, your in the pipeline for a copy. Something to put you to sleep on a cold night. Hope you are enjoying Sydney [ I was up there two weeks ago for 6 days at Coolaroy] Again thanks,
Whilst I cannot find the William Dawes specifically, here is a photo of a Liberty ship underway, perhaps you could just indicate that hundreds of these sturdy ships were built, and here is one example, and they all looked very much alike. Sorry I have not been much help to you on this occasion. I look forward to seeing the finished product. All the best,
Again I'm in your debt. Your advice about submiting the pictures as an examples of the William Dawes and the 1-11 is a good idea. I'm sure the American editor will have better resources than I and will get the proper photos if he wants to really be accurate or use your examples. The same goes for the Australian and UK editors although Thanks for your help again and will mention you in despatches. Regards,
