William’s Position on Economic Development
Georgia’s economy is slowly emerging from the downturn. According to the Labor Department, the number of unemployed declined by 12 percent in March to 37,659 down from 42,764 in February.

Our greatest concern should be protecting the kids of these families. We should make sure that the safety net is big enough to sustain them until their parents find employment.

As Your Congressman, I would introduce and support legislation that would protect Georgia families and stimulate the economy:

  1. In severe economic downturns, I would extend unemployment insurance benefits.
  2. While receiving unemployment insurance, the individual would be required to enroll in a job retraining program.
  3. Build government/private entrepreneur schools to encourage individuals to become owners instead of workers.
  4. Expand the empowerment zone programs to encourage development in distressed areas.

Our greatest strength is the diversity of our economy. We must continue to look for ways to increase our independence. This independence will protect us from the cyclical downturns of the economy.
