On Friday May 10, 2002 the U.S. House of Representatives passed the defense appropriation bill with a vote of 359-58. If I were a member of Congress today, I would have voted for the bill.

At $393 billion (senate version), the bill would provide an increase of about $50 billion, or 15%, over what Congress authorized for 2002. Some of the highlights of the bill include:

  1. Sets aside $7.8 billion for development of a national missile defense system.
  2. Allows military retirees who are at least 60% disabled to collect disability benefits on top of retirement pay by 2007, at a cost of $5.8 billion.
  3. Orders an across-the-board military pay raise of at least 4.1%, effective Jan. 1, 2003.

William Coit said that this bill is good for the nation. The events of 9-11-2002 were a wake-up call to drastically upgrade our military infrastructure. Never again should our domestic security be threatened by terrorist.

William said as the leader of the free world, we are entrusted with an awesome responsibility to maintain peace when conflict arises. It’s a role that we have accepted. As the only superpower remaining, we will continue to fight for freedom and democracy around the globe.
