Campaign Diary by William Coit
Saturday, May 04, 2002

Dear supporters, thank you for the kind words and emails. Our campaign is moving forward to primary day August 20, 2002.   We believe the voters of the 13th district will choose a candidate whose unafraid to take a stand on the issues. Leadership requires making tough decisions. William accepts the challenge of providing leadership and solving the problems of the 13th district.   We're entering the stretch run and the need for volunteer support is great. If you have 3 hours a week to contribute to our campaign please send an email with your contact information.

William’s Position on Education
The elections of 2002 present an excellent opportunity for meaningful change of the education system. By now, you’ve probably heard all of the statistics about the deplorable state of education in Georgia. We rank at the bottom and I am not going to beat that drum any more. The challenge of candidates running for public office is to develop a workable plan to ameliorate the conditions of failing schools in Georgia.

As your Congressman, I would introduce and support legislation that would drastically reform public education.

  1. I would give parents control over the selection of schools.
  2. Streamline the layers of bureaucracy. The savings would be used to increase teacher pay and to provide technology for     schools.
  3. Remove unruly kids from classrooms. Teachers complain about the inability to complete their daily tasks because of     disruptive behavior from kids.
  4. Give authority to a parent/teacher review board to take over failing schools and implement changes.

Georgia did not get into this position overnight and to expect immediate improvement is unrealistic. We must take corrective steps today and in the words of President Bush, "Leave No Kid Behind." Our future as a competitive state is depended on improving the education system in Georgia.
