Campaign Diary by Willaim Coit
Monday, September 24, 2001Hi friends, it's Official. I have a district to run in. The 13th Congressional District is about 47 percent white, 42 percent black, 10 percent Hispanic and 1 percent Asian. It's the most multi-cultural district in the state. Several Democratic challengers have expressed an interest in this district. Sen. Donzella James, Sen. Nadine Thomas, Sen. Greg Hecht, Sen. David Scott, Democratic Party Chairman David Worley, among the few. On the Republican side, Businessman Clay Cox and the next Congressman from the 13th District William Coit.
My meeting with the Republican Party Chairman Ralph Reed was both informative and supportive. He assured me that the resources of the Republican Party are at my disposal. The keys to winning this campaign will be raising $2,000,000 and maximizing my Republican base 60% and winning 30% of the African-American vote. California Speaker Jesse Unruh once said that "Money is the Mother's Milk of Politics" and without it you will not be able to get your message out. I will be setting up a letter writing and telemarketing effort to address the money issue. I have identified several potential big name contributors to target for campaign donations. Second, I have identified my Republican base. My campaign plan has specific proposals in place to reach and capture this vote. The African-American vote presents me with a challenge considering African-Americans traditionally vote Democratic. I'm prepared to bring my message directly to African-Americans and ask for their support. I believe African-Americans will vote based on the candidate who best address the issues and can provide a solution for improving the district. I have developed a plan and I will be presenting it shortly.
