Campaign Diary by Willaim Coit
Tuesday, September 04, 2001Hi friends, As of September 4, 2001. I do not have a district to run in. The Georgia Senate abruptly sent the redistricting map back to committee for more refinement.
Different factions within the legislature voiced their disapproval. African-American Democrats were concerned about the dilution of black voters spread across the two new districts to bolster the election of white Democrats. Republicans expressed concerned about the lack of a community feel to the district especially with the creation of the 13th district.
The 13th district winds around the outside of I-285 from Marietta, Norcross, Newton County, Douglass County, Henry County, and Clayton County. It's a hodgepodge of democratic communities with a population that's 36% African-American, 12% Hispanic, 5% Asian, and 47% White.
I like this district. It's multi-racial with various competing interests. It's the type of district that my message would work well in and I would like to represent. The negatives are the lack of compactness and the dilution of black voters. White Democrats were the only group that expressed satisfaction with the new districts. The intent of the plan is to increase the number of white Democrats to congress.
As mentioned, this map in its present configuration does not have a chance of passing the Georgia Senate. So The Wait Continues...
