Campaign Diary by William Coit
Monday, February 25, 2002Dear Supporters, thanks for all of the kind words and emails. Your encouragements provide me with the strength to continue my campaign.
This weekend, I spoke at the South Fulton Republican Party and my speech went well. My opponent, Clay Cox was in attendance. He spoke and I noticed that there are some distinctions between the two of us. I will talk about those areas of disagreement in the future.
On Saturday night, the Republican National Committee sponsored an outreach program and dinner titled "African-American Leadership Forum on Community Growth and Empowerment." There were 400 people in attendance. The guest speakers included Kay Coles James, Dr. Leo Mackay, and Dylan Glenn. The highlight was the speech given by Kay Coles James. She was confirmed on July 11, 2001 to be Director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Mrs. James is a graduate of Hampton University and the author of three books.
Her message began with the readings of the slave narratives and their emancipation, her journey from the projects and how she overcame obstacles along the way, her decision to leave the Democratic Party and join the Republican Party, and culminating with her prophesy of her son becoming the first "Black President of the United States." The speech was powerful. There were some Democrats in the house and after hearing her speech, I'm sure they decided it was time for them to switch their party affiliation. I agreed with every thing Mrs. Cole said except, her son would have to take a ticket and stand in line behind me as I will be the first "Black President of the United States." My mother, Pearl Minor had the same prophecy about ten years ago. So, I am obligated to fulfill her destiny.
