Learn about web

Learning about the web from the web:

Given my computing background some of this web stuff is easy and some is  hard for me.  I return to these sites again and again for assistance.  The average surfer, the beginning page builder, and the advanced webmaster can find real value here.

Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing  by Philip Greenspun This is a remarkable book published on the web as well as on paper.  It's not only about web publishing but recapitulates the history of information technology.  Every page drips with value and irony.  The layperson can find value as well as the computer geek.  My favorite section title is from Chapter 5, "Why Graphic Designers Just Don't Get It."

Joel on Software by Joel Spolsky  Joel's web log, articles, and archives make great reading for the surfer, web creator, and computer nut.  Lots of valuable, well written comment about the web.

glassdog.com by Lance Arthur  Lance is an irrepressible writer and logger but the real gems here are in his Web Design pages.  It is a straight forward and humorous guide to HTML, style sheets, java script, and more.  Really useful information.

useit.com by Jakob Nielson  Mr. Nielson is one of the premier usability experts.  His web page puts into words why we like some websites and hate others.  You might enjoy Philip Greenspun's review of Mr. Neilson's book, Designing Web Usability

ArsDigita Free Services  ArsDigita provides valuable free data base backed services for web creators, including distribution lists, forum management, comment services, and the famous WimpyPoint,  the web based answer to Microsoft PowerPoint.

Webmonkey  I don't know who publishes it but I'm glad they do.  You can find tutorials about web publishing, product reviews, and many lists of services.  Want to find a free host with for FrontPage extensions?  Look here.  Want to find a free search service for you site?  Look here.

Web Developers Virtual Library  Nuts and bolts stuff.  More nerdy than Webmonkey.

Jargon File Resources This is a great dictionary of hacker terms with a sense of Humor.  You can find out what "tar and feather" means.
