The year 2003 saw an increase in car break-ins. This crime is one in which persons break into a car to steal its contents instead of the entire car. Items stolen include purses, briefcase, CD changers, change, files, packages from stores, etc.

But more importantly, this crime has been linked to identity theft, not just homeless persons looking for some fast money or kids' misguided pranks.

We believe that this type of crime has been under-reported in our neighborhood during 2003. This is based upon the number of calls and emails that we have received directly from those who have been victimized by this type of crime.

Please call 911 if you go out one morning and find that your car has been broken into. Please do this even if you feel nothing significant has been stolen. It might help the police determine patterns, etc.

MSP has more directed patrols in the areas of our neighborhood that have been the hardest hit. Catching someone at this type of criminal activity is often more a matter of luck than skilled sleuthing.

So far there has been no real pattern to this year's car break-ins. Although areas near our Cheshire Bridge border have been hit hard, there can be a lapse of 20-30 days without incident. Sometimes areas much further into our neighborhood have hit.

The best way to deter this type of crime is to take preventative measures. [(See our Security Tips Page.) Terry, please make this an active link.] We hope some pairs of sharp eyes or ears, and quick reporting will help us and the APD catch some of these individuals.

We also believe that burglaries and attempted burglaries may have been under-reported 2003.

This is probably also true of scams perpetrated by persons posing as door-to-door salespersons. Again, based upon the number of calls and emails that were received earlier this year this would seem to have been severely under-reported.

All crimes, no matter how minor, should be reported to the police. Call 911 as soon as you discover you have been the victim of these or any other type of crime.
