Security Patrol Officers' Page

The Security Patrol would be nothing without the officers who serve our community. Here you will find information about our officers and some of their stories.

Current Roster of MSP Officers

Investigator Ricardo Vazquez, MSP Lead Officer (MSP 10-year veteran)
Investigator Charles Loner
Investigator Cathy Paula Lyons
Investigator Michael Williams
Sergeant Ben McGee (MSP 10-year veteran)
Sergeant Genaro Sanchez
Sergeant Paul Sparwath
Officer K. Chinyelu (MSP 10-year veteran)
Officer Ken Stapler
Officer Dimas Vega
Officer Elizabeth Walters

Patrolling the Neighborhood
Currently these 11 off-duty APD officers patrol our neighborhood from 60-70 hours weekly. They are usually in the Morningside Patrol car and in full uniform. Two members of the Patrol sometimes ride their APD motorcycles. Occasionally, the officers may drive their personal vehicles or may be in plain clothes.

When the officers come to work for MSP, they must obtain a second job permit from the APD. Their behavior, conduct, and methods are governed by the APD's Standard Operating Policies and Procedures. This means they are completely authorized, equipped, able, and prepared to enforce the law to its full extent.

When an officer comes on duty for MSP, they inform Zone 2 that they are on patrol and are available to accept any calls from dispatch.

After they check the MSP office for messages, notes about what is going on in the neighborhood, vacation patrol requests, and any orders from Lead Officer Vazquez, they go on patrol in the neighborhood.

They are not sitting in the office waiting for neighborhood calls. Calling the MSP office in an emergency instead of 911 defeats the system and you will not receive the response you are expecting.

While on patrol, the officers check homes that have requested vacation patrols, try to ride through each of our streets, watch any known hot spots in our neighborhood, and respond to calls from the police dispatch.

Officer Vernon Schuffett Retires
For several years now, Officer Vernon Schuffett has served on the MSP squad and has been one our vital links to Zone 2, helping coordinate efforts between the Patrol and Zone 2. This summer, Officer Schuffett decided to take an early retirement from APD. We thank him for his service to our neighborhood and our City and wish him well in his new endeavors.

Kudos to Officer Stapler
Lead MSP Officer Rick Vazquez recently received a letter acknowledging Officer Stapler's good work in recovering a stolen vehicle. The letter is reproduced here verbatim. The full name and address have been deleted for security purposes.

Re: Officer K.J. Stapler

Dear Vasuez,

This letter is to acknowledge and express my great appreciation for the fine work of Officer K.J. Stapler.

I met Officer Stapler happen chance a few months ago and shortly after my truck had been stolen. I mentioned that I had been robbed twice recently and Officer stapler pulled out a simple little Office Depot type of notebook. He asked me to describe the truck and other items and he made notes as we talked.

Officer Stapler told me he was an Atlanta City Police officer and would be on the lookout for the truck and it was quite possible that it would eventually show up in his zone.

Bless Pat and be darned, seven to eight weeks later, Officer Stapler spotted my truck and was able to apprehend the driver and the person responsible for the theft.

Had Officer Stapler not been an alert, dedicated police person (incredulously more than six weeks later after a chance conversation) … the chances that this truck would have been recovered are slim and nil.

I wish to express my grateful appreciation to you and the Morningside Security Patrol for hiring such an excellent and extraordinary person as Officer Stapler! If there is any manner in which I can return the favor, pleas let me know. For now, my eternal gratitude.

Sincerely,

Greg B.

Thank you Greg for taking the time to write this note to Detective Vazquez.

On 9/22/03 Officer Stapler arrested a subject who was riding a bike on Lenox Rd. The subject had stolen 4 dress shirts valued at $400. The shirts had been left by a dry cleaner at a home on Reeder Circle. Officer Stapler had noticed the subject earlier in the driveway of another home on Wildwood Circle. As Detective Vazquez said, "Officer Stapler's efforts are to be commended."

Congratulations to Investigator Vazquez
Earlier this year Detective Vazquez left the intergovernmental task force on drugs and became a member of Atlanta's homicide squad. Since then he is often seen in a coat and tie. This summer he was also seen to don a fedora.

The tradition in Atlanta Homicide is that a detective does not receive a fedora until he or she has solved his or her first homicide.

Congratulations to our Lead Officer for his successful transition.
